SE 24th and Ankeny

This space got started then three dead trees where removed by property owners. So it’s back to 2nd base with more sunlight! Thought in the process we lost the design and most plants from last year. Raspberries, some strawberries, and herbs made it thought.

Here’s a picture before the trees where taken out:

Here are some pictures of the space when we first came across it in 2008.

Currently there is a lot of invasive weeds and and vines that are going to take sometime to remove. At the work party on April 11th 2009, we removed trash and major growth of invasive plants. We cleared a path and space to start initial planting. Also some of the flower bulbs we planted on the Johnny Appleseed ride in 2009 are coming up.

    Hey all,

so i live 1/2 block from this place… i had some extra starts and put them in the ground over there today. i have one major question: Water.
Where will the water come from for all these vegetables? I am happy to water a couple times per week….but…..where is the spout, hose, etc? Is the property owner (of the apts next door) willing to let us use their water?

So I live 1/8 block from this place.
Bless you, whoever you are that worked so hard to dig up all this yard. I know it was tough, given how many trees and vines cover the place, and you, whoever has been watering.
I’ve had my eye on that lot for quite a few years, but know I don’t have the stamina to dig garden space, so just let it go. Now that a garden is there, I’ve been tending it periodically, mostly weeding, some trimming, hanging out, some eating.
At this point I want to trim the tomato plants of new blossoms so they’ll put their energy into ripening the fruit they’ve already got. I’ve got a few things I want to plant, to see how they overwinter.

the sun is coming! after its winter journey, that is.
guys are in the ankeny lot as i write, taking down the sick and dead poplar trees. they’re conscious of the garden, but have squashed a few plants.
the tomatoes are scared, peppers have fruit; i took sunflower heads to dry in the sun as most were run over.
there’s a Heap of mostly green firewood if y’all have a need and the means to transport it.
the sawman commented on how much water poplars suck up, depriving the garden. illustration: when he cut the top off one of the smaller mostly dead trees a spout of water shot up out of it.

We still need much help with the space. Mostly in removing invasive weeds that still a regular issue.
